How to Take Better Care of Your Concrete Sink
Did you know that the average bathroom sink is home to 250,000% more germs than the flush handle on your toilet?
The takeaway? Bathroom sinks need to get cleaned regularly.
However, if you have a concrete bathroom sink, you'll need to take special precautions to not damage it while cleaning. The reason for this is certain cleaners can harm the finishes on concrete sinks.
If that happens, you might be left with bathroom sink stains and discoloration.
Want to know how to clean your concrete sink like a pro? If so, keep reading as we do a deep dive on concrete sink care.
Avoid Harsh Cleaners
As mentioned above, the first tenant for cleaning concrete sinks is to avoid harsh cleaners. The reason for this is they can strip the sealants protecting your concrete sink.
Concrete is inherently porous, therefore high-quality concrete sinks are always sealed. Some concrete sinks (such as ours) are sealed through a variety of processes.
If you comprise the integrity of the sealant, this will open your sink up to staining, watermarks, and discoloration.
Additionally, harsh detergents and cleaners are not only harmful to your sink's finish, but they are also detrimental to the environment and impact natural waterways. Therefore, for the sake of your sink and the water bodies in your area, stay away from chemical-based products in your bathroom.
Opt for Natural Soaps or Cleaning Vinegar
So what are suitable cleaning agents for concrete sinks? The rule of thumb when it comes to concrete sink care is that mild, natural soaps are safest.
However, for best results, we recommend that you use cleaning vinegar. Cleaning vinegar not only sterilizes your sink, but it also combats scale build-up.
In addition to vinegar, you can also use a scrubbing brush or soft scourer.
How to Treat Stains
If you encounter a stain on your concrete sink, you can also use vinegar to target it. However, for stubborn marks that have permeated the finish, you might want to target it with some 2,000 grit sandpaper as well.
Wax Your Sink for a Longlasting Finish
When it comes to concrete sink care, it's very important that you wax your sink regularly. Frequent waxing will protect the finishes and will keep your sink glowing and stain-free.
We recommend that you wax your sink every six months. To apply, use a small amount of specially formulated wax and a suitable cloth. Rub gently and evenly onto your basin, then allow to dry.
If you wish to maintain your sink to a high standard, you can apply wax treatments more frequently than the bi-annual minimum recommendation.
Good Concrete Sink Care Isn't Hard
One of the raps that concrete sinks get is that they are hard to maintain and will develop stains. This is not necessarily true. Providing you know what to do,
concrete sink care is not hard. What's more, if you purchase a concrete sink that is made to superior quality standards, bathroom sink stains are not inevitable.
As long as you care for your concrete sink correctly and invest in one that is properly finished, concrete sink damage in the bathroom is rare.
